Following the powerful response to the previous Diary of a Makaton User webinars, Alex returns for Part 4, an honest and important conversation about growing older as a lifelong Makaton user.

Having used Makaton for over 40 years, Alex now shares her experiences of adult life in her 40s and the realities of looking ahead to later life. Through speech, Makaton Signs and Symbols, and personal lived experience, she will explore how Makaton continues to support understanding, communication, independence, wellbeing, and future planning every single day.

This session will cover topics including:

  • Ageing and increasing independence needs
  • Menopause and communicating health changes
  • Employment, Access to Work funding, and staying in work
  • Hobbies, interests, and maintaining quality of life
  • Planning for the future and making important decisions
  • Concerns around declining health, dementia, and end of life planning
  • How Makaton supports communication, choice, safety, and dignity throughout all stages of life

    In Alex’s own words:
"Makaton has grown with me through every stage of my life. As I get older, communication becomes even more important, from understanding health information and planning for the future, to keeping my independence and making sure my voice is still heard. Makaton supports me every day, not just with communication, but with confidence, safety, routines, work, relationships, and preparing for what may come later in life.
Growing older can feel frightening when communication is already a challenge, especially when thinking about things like menopause, declining health, or conditions such as dementia. I want to talk honestly about those fears, the realities, and the ways Makaton can continue to support understanding, choice, and dignity throughout adulthood and beyond."

Join us for another unique and thought-provoking session in this powerful webinar series, offering rare insight into ageing, future planning, and everyday life through the eyes of an adult Makaton user.
